Dusty Rose Crinkle Scarf

The dusty rose scarf...all ready for spring. Cute crinkled satin material and 'rose' pin. Very spring, very soft, very pretty. ; ) I made this from a very special piece of material found at the fabric store in one of our last 'scrounging' episodes. My daughter and I love going through the heaps of discarded/remenant cloth at Joanne's or Hancock's and making something outa nothing.
Yes, the photo is blurry, but I'm ok with that. It was taken by my daughter, she is 5, and I know the detail is off a bit...but I thought she captured this shot so well. One of these days, I'll get a model. I have one in the mix, just need to put a few new scarves, totes or whatever it is that draws my eye. And they will be clear shots, beautiful shots. But these are prescious to me....

One last shot, up close and personal. The pin, as you can see has glass and seed beads in the center. They are clear, gold and olive green in color. I love how the pin allows the wearer to change the look of the simple scarf. It can be turned into a cowl...be long and drapy or classic. Super!
If you'd like to see more of this scarf and other items that we've made, please check out Sugar Pine Boutique, on Etsy.

Etsy Shop Photo Tips

Etsy Shop Photo Tips

Here’s a little ‘behind the scenes’ look at what goes on around here on a typical morning. Get up, prepare older child for school, get him off to school, work on the days project (be it soaping or sewing) while youngest catches up on Sesame Street, and then we have a photo session of said projects.

Since photo’s can be such a maker or breaker in this fast-paced world we live in, I thought I might delve in what we have learned.

I don’t have a fancy camera, and frankly in my opinion, non of us really need one. As long as it has a range of shots it can take: zoom for close-ups (the flower icon optiion being great for small items), flash and no flash; you’re pretty much good to go. One absolute requirement is that it’s digital, of course

Positioning:
It’s a good idea to set up your item or person as you might see them in an add or magazine. No front on portrait shots here. Have the person sit or stand at an angle, stretch their neck a bit, hold it to the side. Whatever it takes to get a little interest, but putting the emphasis primarily on your product. The main idea is to get some attention, but not detract from the item.

If you just have objects, position multiples in odds, they create a more interesting layout. Or if you have an even number, don’t just line them in a tidy row. Create a diamond or other geometric shape other than a square or rectangle, it will create more interest.

*Tip* A cool little tip I’ve learned is that the eye reads in an “e” pattern. That is a small case e: in the middle, to the right, up, down and around. Cool, huh? Remember that next time taking the photo or cropping and watch the majic

Lighting:
Lighting, lighting, lighting It is very crucial. You don’t want to have your figure squinting into the sun I don’t care how many text books once read that you want the light in their face, they will never look good with a squinting frown or closed eyes. I like to position my subjects in the shade, or take a photo on a cloudy day. I take my photos primarily outside on the shady side of my house, or where ever we are, be it morning or evening. Noon is tough, I try to avoid photos in the glaring sun.

For small objects, I try to find a large window, preferably one that has a roof overhang, patio cover or something that will create a little shade directly above the window (avoid leafy or lattice type shade, it will come out in the photo too ).and set up around noon-2pm for east facing windows. I typically position my objects on a chair, an interesting cloth or beaded runner. I keep in mind the positioning pointers listed above and prepare the camera with no flash. I get as close to the object as I can while still maintaining good focus, hold my breath and then take the photo. I try a bunch of different angles, they can always deleted later. Keep the image as clean as possible, as there’s nothing worse than a great shot with a silly shoelace poking in an unexpected place

Photo Software:
Ok, now I’m not going to go into dramatic detail, but I think it is worth pointing out the value of a good photo program. The one I have came with my HP printer/scanner/copier. It’s pretty basic, but I can crop and adjust my photos as needed. The main idea is to get the best photo possible so that once you get to the touch-up stage, there’s not much you need to do.

*Tip* If you are selling items you’re photographing as I am, don’t use the photo options that change the color of your product. As we all know, monitors don’t always display what the camera picked up and the camera may have picked up the color differently than it is in real life. If you have to change the color at all, just make sure that it is as close to what the product actually looks like as possible.

I hope these pointers will help you on your way. I know as soon as I started using these few pointers, my photos have been much more of a success. As said before, "This is only the beginning."

If you have any that you’d like to add, feel free. ; )

The Secret is Out!

I've been waiting until after my sister's birthday to post one of my most recent creations...I couldn't possibly post before in fear that she'd see it before the big day!

This is an over-the-shoulder sling bag made from my own pattern. The material is a finely ribbed corduroy with a print that reminds me of  designs I saw while traveling in Maui. The colors used would go great with jeans or khaki's, a couple of my sister's normal stand-by's.

It has a 'belt' type strap that makes it very adjustable for the wearer. The purse also has leather accents on the straps that I found particularly attractive. I double-stitched where the straps meet the purse for extra strength, no small feat for my sewing machine!

It is fully lined with a coordinating fabric and sports three inside pockets, one sporting velcro for trapping those pesky keys. A snap insures it will stay closed, even while swinging most energetically as my sister goes about her business.
I have just enough fabric to make one more of these puppies, so be prepared to see one soon on my Etsy site!
Thanks again for stopping by.

Out and About--And the Hanky Panky Dress

Last night my hubby took our family out to the West Nugget Rib Cookoff in Sparks, Nevada. The event was on its wind-down, but you really couldn't tell by all the people attending chowing down on some of the best ribs ever!!

West Nugget Rib Cook-off 2009

We did some sampling of a new-to-us vendor called "Maui Wowie", a nod towards our summer vacation in Maui that ended a month ago. And, OH WOWIE!! It was superb. Their sauce was perfectly sweet and tangy, absolutely finger-licking good! We also tried the fresh squeezed lemon ade which were also top rate. I love being so close to a city that has so much to offer.

What a welcome break after spending a good part of the day piecing together a new "favorite" dress for my daughter, made solely out of bandanna's. She absolutely loved her new dress, mainly because it was so easy for her to pick out the colors.  She decided to wear it to the cook off and had to be one of the most festive girls there!

More of these will be appearing on etsy. I plan to put together more fall color selections and add a few embleshmints here and there. You can check it out at Sugar Pine Boutique

Thanks for stopping in.

The Eye Pillow

Mmmm...to thine tired eyes, you are such a blessing....

I was searching and searching for something unique to send my sister for her birthday this year. Generally I'll put something together from the bead shop, or consider her yoga/running routine, but I wanted this year to be different.

After receiving my grandmothers vintage sewing machine (wooden desk included) I've been playing with new patterns and fabrics. Then it dawned on me that I could make something with this machine and my sister could benefit from my new found passion.

The eye pillow was born, made from dried lavender, lentil beans and pinto beans. I created an inner casing for the pillow components and a colorful, washable cover. Then I figured it would be nice to have something to house the eye pillow in, no dust bunnies here! I looked around and found a pair of super soft khaki pants I had destroyed at my day job. They were perfectly fine for making a super cool cover though. So I made a fabric 'envelope' for the pillow, flower applique and all. It really rocked!! The one witht he green/brown/grey flower was sent to my sister.

I of course couldn't stop at one, so I have more listed on etsy! ; ) There's lavender, chamomile/lavender/rose and rose scented pillows available right now.

I do believe that her mantra will be more of the tune of 'inhale...mmmmmm....inhale...mmmm.
